Canada

01

Eligibility

  • Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident 

  • Find timeline here from CaRMS website

  • From 2021-2022 year

    • ​4 October 2021 at 12:00 (noon) ET: CaRMS application opens

    • 8 December 2021 at 12:00 (noon) ET: Program selection opens

    • 17 January 2022 DEADLINE: Transcripts and MSPRs sent by faculties (NOT requiring translation)

    • 30 January 2022 DEADLINE: Reference (LOR) submission

    • 31 January 2022 at 12:00 (noon) ET DEADLINE: Submission and assignment of applications and documents

    • 31 January 2022 at 12:05 ET

      • File review begins, programs now have access to all submitted applications and documents.

      • Programs may now start updating applicants’ interview offer status

      • Thus DON'T feel rushed to submit as early as possible, however we suggest you submit at least 3 days before this so that there are no issues!

    • 18 February 2022 DEADLINE: Interview offer status updates in CaRMS Online (prior to sending interview invitations)

    • 28 February 2022 - 20 March 2022: National interview period

    • 7 March 2022 at 12:00 (noon) ET: Ranking period begins
      Applicants and programs may begin creating their rank order lists in CaRMS Online.

    • 31 March 2022 at 15:00 ET DEADLINE: Applicant rank order list

    • 12 April 2022 at 12:00 (noon) ET: MATCH DAY

      • Match results are available through CaRMS Online.

Canadian Examinations

  • MCCQE Part 1

    • ​Apply up to 15 months prior to expected date of graduation (This year May 15, 2021 – check with International Medicine Office for graduation date in 2023) 

    • Only 5 ‘sessions’ each year, not all are eligible for 2023 match timeline

  • NAC (OSCE Exam)

    • Can write the NAC if you are completing your medical degree requirements within 12 months of the date of the exam 

    • Check the website for details

      • e.g in 2021, NAC registration began on May 26, 2021 at 10am Canadian time via physiciansapply.ca

Apply through CaRMs

  • Make a CaRMS Application

  • Prepare all Supporting Documents:

    • More info on who and where to upload documents from CaRMS

    • More info on document types from CaRMS website

    • ​​Letter of language proficiency*

    • Letters of Reference (in 2021 programs required between 2-3 LORs)

    • ​NAC examination - Statement of results (send via physiciansapply.ca)

    • NAC examination - Supplemental Information Report  (send via physiciansapply.ca)

    • MCCQE Part I - Statement of Results (send via physiciansapply.ca)

    • MCCQE Part I - Supplemental Information Report (send via physiciansapply.ca)

    • Personal Letter (basically your personal statement if applied also to ERAS - just make sure you look at the max word count for each school eg. UOttawa Max 500, UofT 1000 max)

    • Medical School Diploma

    • Medical School Transcript (International office uploads this)

    • Medical Student Performance Record (MSPR - International office helps with this)

    • Custom Résumé / CV (obviously can restate things from the CaRMS application)

    • Undergraduate Transcript (Bachelor's Degree)

    • CASPer exam

      • Really good FREE practice site 

        • PrepMatch is the world's first free peer-to-peer CASPer preparation platform (have ~ 8 full length practice tests)

      • Register for CASPer test

        • Register at least 3 days in advance of the test day you want. It is written at home on a computer with webcam

        • To register click here, there is a $100.00 fee plus tax

          • Step 1: select country "Canada"​

          • Step 2: select language

          • Step 3: select program "Postgraduate Medical Education R1 Match"

          • Step 4: select the school(s): "Canadian Resident Matching Service"

          • Step 5: choose your date and pay fees

  • Select the residency positions and submit your application

  • Interview with the institutions

  • Make a rank list
